Benjamin and several of the others had gone to refill their mugs at the beer barrel, and Noah stood alone for a few minutes, watching the dancers. In particular, he watched as Leo and the Indian maid he was dancing with separated from the circle and went off alone, to the corner of the servantsâ house.
Leo stood close to her, and his fingers intertwined with hers. Noahâs eyes stayed glued to them, to Leoâs fingers stroking the girlâs forearm. Those fingers that had tickled Noahâs bollocks when he âmeasuredâ him for his breechclout, and teased his pillicock with a graze, now found the touch of a young woman more appealing.
Noah couldnât help the pangs of jealousy that ripped through him, even though it was hypocritical, given his own activities with Benjamin.
âThey look well together, donât they?â
Mr. Mortonâs voice startled Noah. His cheeks heated at being discovered staring. He nodded, but kept silent.
âShe is a beautiful girl, is she not? And our Leo is a beautiful boy. They would make a good match. How much more beautiful would be the offspring of such a union, should that happen?â
Noah frowned. That wouldnât be a good thing at all. Leo, he was like themâlike Noah and Benjaminânot like most boys who liked girls.
âAt the height of Romeâs grandeur, no less a luminary than Cicero wrote, âA true lover of beauty must be equally drawn to both sexes.â Our Leo is a true lover of beauty. As am I.â
Noahâs eyes widened, and he looked at Mortonâs face. The audacious admission hung in the air like mist.
Amusement twinkled in Mortonâs eyes. âDoes it shock thee to hear me speak thusly?â
Noah wondered if he would seem unsophisticated to admit that it did. He shrugged, and Morton chuckled.
âAt the Inns of Court, we spend a great deal of time studying the writings of the Greeks and Romans, ruminating over every minute detail of their law and philosophy. Far more than do students of the universities at Oxford and Cambridge. It is necessary for lawyers, you see. But one canât help but be struck at how often the ancients waxed on about the beauty of the male form, sometimes more than the beauty of women. One realizes the natural state of man is to be drawn to both.â
Noah dropped his eyes. If manâs natural state were to be drawn to both sexes, then he was still unnatural; heâd only ever been drawn to boys.
Morton put his arm around Noah. âLet that thought bring thee comfort, Noah. Thou art not alone in such desire. Indeed, the Inns of Court encourage a certain libertine attitude among those who are open to it. I wish thou could have known that, as I did at thy age. It might have brought thee confidenceâsomething that I suspect was stolen from thee, by someone close. But I see it budding in thee now.â
Noah nodded. âThank you.â
Benjamin and the others returned with full mugs, laughing at something.
âCome, lads! Let us make merry, as did our
